The well known Halabja Genocide all started in March 16-17, 1988 at supposedly 11:35 between the Kurds and the Iraqis. The Halabja Genocide was a gas bombing that killed and injured many innocent people. Approximately 7000-10000 people had serious injuries and later died. The people to blame for this bombing were the Iraqis.  It started, “Earlier in 1988, Iraqi aircraft bombed Iranian cities with devastating psychological effect”, (Back in Time). During this bombing, “Over 1000 Kurdish villages were destroyed in the operations, as were their livestock and orchards”, (Totten). Not only were their homes, livestock, and land destroyed, so were there families. Early that morning, people had remembered hearing napalm shell bombs. This didn’t alarm the villagers because they were used to hearing them near by because of hte war. But when they heard and saw the planes flying over, they began to panic. Since it was early morning, children were outside playing. When they heard the bombs start to go off they tried to run to their homes. But by the time they got to their home, the gas had already killed them. this means that the children were only able to get to their front door steps. Many people, especially women, children and elders died because of the gas bombs. The bombs that were being dropped were filled with mustard gas to kill the citizens. When it happened, “At least 60,000 Kurdish refugees fled into Turkey” (Back in Time). Many of the Kurds left their small town if they were able to make it alive.  If they were able to make it out, they either suffered birth defects or serious health issues.
